The Gateway
The Gateway is an alternative provision within Future Schools Trust, designed to tailor the curriculum to each individual student, while at the same time developing the young person and implementing specific interventions to support their needs.
The Gateway is welcoming and inclusive to encourage attendance and ensure our students experience an environment that they can have pride in and is conducive to learning, progress and personal development.

The Curriculum
The Gateway offers a personalised approach to learning with small class sizes of around six students. This enables staff to successfully differentiate learning to meet the needs of each individual student and provide focused 1:1 support on a regular basis.
Students access traditional academic subjects such as English, Mathematics and Citizenship, but at the same time enjoy more vocational subjects, such as:
- Animal Care/Land Based studies
- Hair and Beauty
- Sport, Health and Fitness
- Construction
- Painting and Decorating
- Gardening
- Art and Textiles
- Personal Finance
- Hospitality
- Computing
- Life Skills
Our main aim is to provide young people within the Trust with an inclusive tailor-made curriculum, alongside the opportunity for a “fresh start”. We enable students to explore and celebrate their unique personal qualities, whilst supporting their learning through personalised interventions, which aim to build their confidence and self-esteem, promote and encourage academic progress and reconnect with a love of learning.
Our focus is on academic progress for all students, however, we also place a large emphasis on developing positive behaviours, becoming a positive member of the Gateway community and the wider local community.
Many Year 11 students elect to remain at Gateway until the end of Year 11 to complete their GCSE’s. Year 11 students also focus on their onward journeys after Year 11 by accessing our careers curriculum, visiting local Colleges/6th Forms and completing their College applications.
Inclusion and Safeguarding
Running alongside our academic curriculum, we have excellent care, guidance and support. Safeguarding is at the forefront of everything we do at Gateway. Our DSL works closely with colleagues across the Trust and with external agencies ensuring the highest levels of Safeguarding. SEND provision is key to our work at Gateway, with extra support and targeted interventions to support these students.
The Gateway and its staff are in the fortunate position to work very closely with the Senior Leadership Team, SENCO’s and other staff across the Trust. This provides a wealth of support, knowledge and experience in the following areas, that is used to enhance the Gateway provision.
- Safeguarding and Pastoral Care
- SEND provision
- Teaching and Learning
- Behaviour for Learning
- Academic Progress
- Attendance – monitoring and tracking
- Staff CPD
- CEIAG
Provision Review Process
Throughout their time studying at Gateway, each student completes a 6 or 12 week review, to ensure the Gateway provision continues to meet their specific needs. The Head of Gateway and Senior Leadership Team from the respective mainstream school, will liaise closely with the student and parents/carers. Students will then be provided with the opportunity to return to mainstream education, move to another educational setting or remain at Gateway.
Accessing the Gateway
Students only access Gateway as an intervention if staff believe Gateway is the correct provision for the student in question. This decision will be taken by the Senior Leadership Team and Head of Gateway. Parents/carers cannot apply or request a place at Gateway.
