What we do in KS4:
In Key Stage 4, The Level 2 Award in Child Development and Care.
This course has been designed to meet the needs of learners from the age of 14 years and includes the knowledge and understanding of child development and well-being necessary for working with children in a variety of settings. The award is aimed at a range of learners who wish to be introduced to childcare and development for children aged 0-5 years and it gives learners an insight into their preferred learning styles, developing their ability to study.
- Unit 1 - Mandatory - Internally assessed assignment graded A*D
- Unit 2 - Mandatory - Internally assessed assignment graded A*D
- Unit 3 - Mandatory - Multiple choice question paper graded pass/refer
During each term homework will be set in a booklet and will allow the learners to gain extra information relating to the working with children. The booklet will be set at the beginning of term and will be handed in the week before the end of term. Students should allow themselves an hour a week in order to complete the booklet.
What we do in KS5:
The Level 3 Award, Certificate and Diploma in Childcare and Education (Full Time Two Year Course)
The Level 3 Award in Childcare and Education prepares learners to progress to the Technical Level 3 Certificate in Childcare and Education and then on to the Technical Level 3 Diploma in Childcare and Education (Early Years Educator), which enables them to gain the knowledge and experience which will allow them to work with children from birth to 5 years.
The Technical Level 3 Diploma in Childcare and Education (Early Years Educator) enables learners to enter the workforce as Early Years Educators or access Higher Education.
Students undertaking the course will need to have four GSCE grades A*-C, with one being in English and one being in Maths
Experience in the work place:
Learners taking the course will need to have access to real work environments as they need to show competence in both knowledge and skills. CACHE recommend the minimum of 750 placement hours over the two years
All units will be internally assessed using a range of methods. All units are graded A*-D. Learners taking the Certificate must also complete an extended assessment - CCE1 (externally set, externally marked). Learners taking the Diploma must also complete the extended assessments - CCE1 and DCE2 (externally set, externally marked).
External Assessments in order to achieve a pass grade or to improve a grade.
The Technical Level 3 Diploma in Childcare and Education (Early Years Educator) enables learners to access Higher Education. Alternatively, learners can progress into various job roles in the statutory, voluntary or private sectors such as:
- Early Years Educator (Diploma only)
- practitioner in day nurseries
- practitioner in nursery schools
- practitioner in reception classes in primary schools
- pre-school worker
- home based childcarer
