Every day New Line Learning Academy falls silent for 15 minutes as staff and students Drop Everything And Read (DEAR).
During DEAR time students choose their own book and read quietly for a full 15 minutes. The initiative has been running at NLL since September 2011 and has proved a massive success with students and teachers alike.
Since the beginning of the scheme students' progress has been monitored. Benefits of taking part in DEAR everyday include:
- Increased reading comprehension
- A more varied vocabulary
- Improved confidence in speaking and listening
Within NLL's state-of-the-art building staff are able to create a comfortable atmosphere for reading by adjusting the lighting to change the mood and playing soft classical music to improve concentration levels. Every year plaza has a book box filled with age-relevant material and book purchases are made according to student requests. Golding Homes have also generously supported the initiative with a £1000 donation towards new books.
Literacy Coordinator, Nicola Simmons, said: "By dedicating 15 minutes each day to reading we are able to raise the profile of books and reading in our students' lives. It's wonderful to see so many positive interactions between students and staff, whether sharing, recommending or discussing books to read. At NLL we strive to make reading fun and demonstrate the joy that reading can bring. We hope that DEAR will develop our students into lifelong readers and learners."
