What happens in the Year 7 Induction?
- In the summer term your parents are invited to attend an Information Evening where the Headteacher, Deputy Headteachers and the Wellbeing Team give them a presentation. Parents can then make an appointment to meet with your Form Tutor at the Meet the Tutor Evening.
- Meet the Tutor Evening takes place about a week after the parent Information Evening. Along with your parents, you will have the opportunity to meet your form tutor and ask any questions that you may have. During this evening you can also buy uniform and find out more about laptop/tablets, cashless catering and bus passes.
- July hosts an Induction Day for new students who are due to start in September. You will participate in team building games, have a tour of the Academy, gain an understanding of the times of the day, and play drama and sport games.
Who can I go to if I have a problem or concern at school?
- If you have a problem at school then please talk to your form tutor as a first port of call. If the problem is serious then you or your form tutor may take the issue to your Head of Year.
Travel to and from School:
How do most students get to school?
- Most students get the bus into school, with buses travelling to Cornwallis from all over Maidstone. More information about buses to the Academy can be found by clicking here.
- A number of students walk, cycle or get dropped off at school. If you are cycling to school, we have a number of bike sheds for you to secure your bike. It is important that you secure your bike with a suitable chain. The Academy takes no responsibility for loss or damage of bikes left on site.
How do I get a bus pass?
- For students in Years 7 to 11, a Young Persons Travel Pass is available via Kent County Council. It costs £200 for the year, and includes all bus travel for students. It costs £100 for students who get free school meals. Please click here for more information, and to apply.
- Students aged 16 and over can apply for a 16+ Travel Card. The most you'll pay is £400. You may pay less if you’re only using it for part of the year or if you are from a low-income family. Please click here for more information. The bus pass will be sent to Cornwallis’ Sixth Form team who will distribute to students.
Where can my parents drop me off if I am not taking the bus?
- Parents can drop off and pick up students in the ‘Student Drop Off’ area, which is located just inside the school’s main entrance. Beyond the barrier is for staff, visitor and disabled parking only.
- If your parents have a meeting, or you are disabled, please use the buzzer at the barrier to enter the main car park.
What happens on the first day of school in September?
- You spend period one with your Form Tutor and are given your planner and timetable, and have time to get to know your form group. You will then go your normal lessons with guidance from your subject teachers.
What equipment do I need for school?
- Pencil case

What you are not allowed to wear?
- Mobile phones must not be taken into lessons. If you bring a mobile phone to school, it must be switched off and stored in your locker. The Academy takes no responsibility for loss or damage of mobile phones.
- Only one set of earrings can be worn, which must be PLAIN gold or silver studs
- No make-up, acrylic nails or nail varnish
- No necklaces or bracelets
- No chewing gum or sweets
- No big hair clips
- No short skirts, skin tight trousers or leggings
- All school shoes must be black, and no trainers or canvas shoes to be worn in school.

How long is the school day?
- The school day runs from 8.30am until 3pm, with optional afterschool activities available.

How many lessons are in a school day?
- There are five one-hour lessons in a typical day.
What should I do if I am late for school?
- Report to Reception and sign in.
What shall I do if I miss a day of school?

What should I do if I need time off school for an appointment or holiday?

Can I take bottled water into class?
- No, but when it is extremely hot in the summer term tutors will inform students if they can take water into class.
How do my parent(s) contact a teacher?
- Your parents should contact Reception by emailing email@example.com or calling 01622 743152. Reception staff will then put them in touch with the relevant member of staff.
What do I do if I am unwell during school time?
- Go to your Wellbeing Lead or Intervention Challenge Manager to seek permission to go to the medical room, which is next to the Main Office, where you will be assessed by a qualified first aider. Do not call parents directly.
Are there any extra-curricular activities I can get involved with?
- Yes, there is a full timetable available on the website and SLG. This is published in the second week of each term. Please click here to see the latest timetable of activities.
What will each activity involve and do I need to bring any additional items, e.g. PE Kit?

How do I inform you if I no longer wish to continue an activity?

How much are instrumental lessons?
- 10 group instrumental lessons per two term costs just £40.
What instruments can I play?
- We offer the following: flute, oboe, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, cornet, trombone, violin, viola, electric and classical guitar, bass guitar and drums.
How do I apply?
- Fill out the form that is included in your school welcome pack and return it to Reception.
I would like to learn an instrument, but I do not own one?
- That is fine, you can hire an instrument directly from Kent Music School.
When will parents be invoiced for payment for the group instrumental lessons?
- With your application, parents will be asked to send in three post-dated cheques, which will be cashed in September, January and April of the current academic year.
Will I miss normal lessons?
- Yes. Instrumental teachers operate a rotating timetable so that students do not miss the same lesson more than once per half term session.
When will I find out if I have been accepted onto the group instrumental scheme?
- A letter will be sent to you before September, notifying you of your place. The letter will also inform you of the date and time of your first lesson.
Do I have to carry my instrument around school all day?
- No, all students bring their instruments up to the music department before morning registration, where they can be stored all day. You can then collect your instrument when you come down for your lesson, and again, place it back into the storeroom after your lesson. Instruments can then be collected at 3pm and taken home.
Is there a breakfast club?
- There is no specific breakfast club at Cornwallis, however the canteen opens at 7.30am for students to buy breakfast.
Do I have to have school dinner?
- No, you can bring a packed lunch.
What is cashless catering?
- Cashless catering is a way to buy food and drink in school. You load money on to your card in advance via the online payment system. Please click here for more information
Do I have to use cashless catering to pay for my lunch?
- Yes, if you wish to use the canteen to buy food or drink. Otherwise you can bring a packed lunch.

What happens if I am eligible for free school meals?
- Parents/carerss must apply online. If you are successful a hot meal and dessert will be loaded onto your card automatically for you to get lunch. For more information please speak to someone in the Main Office.

- Yes trips are charged to parents. In certain circumstances it may be possible for the school to subsidise a trip but parents should contact the school first before applying for a place on the visit.
If I receive free school meals will a packed lunch be provided when we go on trips?
- Yes, if the visit runs over lunchtime.
What is the school donation and what does it get spent on?
- The school donation is a £25 donation that parents make to the school, per family, at the beginning of the year. The donation money is used to support educational visits, transport to sports fixtures, student support and extra-curricular activities.
Is it optional?
- The contribution is optional but donations enable us to improve the provision of school activities that we can offer students and help to enrich learning.
What is the SLG?
- The SIMS Learning Gateway allows parents and students to access attendance, achievement and self-management information. Termly reports are placed here too.
When will my parents receive their username and password?
- Parents will receive their username and password in the first week of term via post once a signed agreement form has been received.
Are all students issued a laptop in Year 7?
- The Academy invites families to buy into our Computer for Students scheme, where you will be able to own a learning device for a small monthly payment. We have negotiated an excellent deal on both hardware and software using our relationship with Microsoft and other suppliers. Who do I contact if I have technical issues with my device, or if I’m unsure how to use any element of my device?
- Contact the ICT technicians at break and lunch times, or before and after school.
Do all students get a school email account?
- Yes, all students get an email address to send homework and communicate with staff, where necessary.
How do I log in to my email?
- You can log in to your email accounts via the webmail link which can be located at the top of any page on the Cornwallis website.
Can I access these emails at home?
Do I have to have a school device to access my school emails and the SLG?
- No, these can be accessed from any device and any location.
How does Blended Homework work?
- Students in Years 7 and 8 engage in homework through our Blended Learning system, completing online projects in English, maths, science, geography and history each term. The system gives you the opportunity to access a flexible online learning space, which incorporates presentations, booklets, quizzes and videos. Alongside these five projects, your MFL (Modern Foreign Languages) teacher will also set 20 minutes of vocabulary learning each week.
- The Blended Learning system allows you to access your homework from within school or at home. Within each of the homework projects, you are required to upload work for marking. Your work is marked online and once completed, you will be able to view your mark and comments awarded by the teacher.
- Each term you will receive a homework timetable that gives information on the project deadlines and a suggested date to complete each task to help you structure your time at home when completing homework.
- During ICT lessons, at the start of Year 7, you will be shown how to log into the Blended Learning system and begin to enroll onto the homework courses.
How do I access my homework projects?
- In the address bar of your web browser, type http://bl.futureschoolstrust.com and press enter (note that the address does not start with www)
Log in. Your username is your full school email address.

- Once logged in you will land on the Overview Page. Here, a list of courses that you have already signed up to will display and you just need to click on the arrow to start/continue that project
- If you need to search for a course, in the search bar next to the ‘Find a course’ button, enter the name of the course you wish to sign up for and then click ‘Find a course’
- Click on ‘Enroll Now’ to sign up to that course and make it appear on your Overview Page
How do I upload my homework?
- When a homework project requires a piece of work to be uploaded, follow these steps:
- Press the “Choose file” button.
- A window pops up to let you choose the file you want to submit
- If your file is not there, press the “Choose file” button next to where it says “No file chosen”
- Navigate to where your file is saved, click it and press the “Open” button
- Press the “Upload button”
- Your file should appear in the list at the top, you can now click it and press the “Add” button to add it to the page.
- Lastly, press the “Submit Files” button to save the file to the project.
- Please also note that the ‘accessing your homework projects’ and ‘uploading work’ information above can also be found on the last page of your planner.
Who can I turn to if I need help with my homework?
- You can turn to the teachers that have set the homework, or attend a homework club (see club timetable).

How often do my parents receive information about me?
- Academic reports are issued every term.
How often are parents’ evenings?
- Parent Information Evenings are once a year, usually around April for students in Year 7. If parents have any concerns in the meantime they can always contact Form Tutors, the Wellbeing Lead for Year 7, or subject teachers directly.
What happens if I get a detention?
- The teacher will phone home to inform your parent(s). You will not be kept afterschool unless the teacher has informed parents.
